The book transient mothers documents the lives of Surrogate Mothers in their almost surrealistic environment. Beds after beds with cabinets containing their few belongings and minimal decor in the form of a godly picture, a mirror and handmade crafts by their young ones, the hospital setting feels like a space removed from reality.
Within these four walls, their real family is replaced by other women embarking the same journey and the hospital staff. Sometimes their own children share these spaces with them; unaware as to why their mothers and their new friend’s mothers were there. These children in their innocence enjoy their vacation, expecting a new brother or a sister, who they will never really meet.
The book is also an attempt at placing my own voice in the form of small hidden pockets within this world of theirs.
All of them are well cared for and are happy or atleast satisfied with their decision, which for most, is shrouded in indignity.
The book is a glimpse at the process of Surrogacy as well, that begins within a lab and ends with the mothers and the newborns going their own separate ways.
