After years of training in biology, Swasti took the road less travelled by fellow biologists and entered the world of photography in 2015. While her process is highly informed by her experience in the lab, her practice is about exploring (but not restricted to) these experiences beyond what a lab was capable of.
She also uses her work to confront loneliness and isolation in spaces both new and familiar.
Swasti is deeply intrigued by photo archives and the history of photography in the South Asian context. Her extensive research on Wiele & Klein (later Klein & Peyerl) studio, Madras Presidency was presented at the 25th European Conference on South Asian Studies held at Paris in July 2018.
Since early 2020, she has been exploring the concepts of migration and displacement.
She uses a multidisciplinary approach in all of her projects; working with photographs, installations, texts, videos and projections.
She graduated from the National Institute of Design after pursuing a Masters in Photography and also briefly attended Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig as an exchange student with scholarship from Goethe Institute.
Swasti is currently a mentor at the BIPOC Mentorship Program in Canada.
